Matthew: Beta Playtest


We shared a build of the game for the Open Beta Playtest. We received a number of responses that resulted in the following concrete changes that I made this week:

  • I added dialogue at the beginning of the game that tells you the controls. This helps most specifically with the "arrow keys to control the camera", which very few playtesters figured out on their own.
  • I added credits dialogue in the chicken pen area for a conclusive cue that the game is over.
  • I added a giant arrow pointing towards the barn exit to show players how to leave the area once they have the box of infinite feathers.

There were some other changes I attempted:

  • I tried to add mouse control for the camera, but it didn't work as well as I wanted it to. This seemed partly because of the fact that my input in Unity is very delayed, so I couldn't figure out how to use the mouse to move the camera intuitively once it was implemented.
  • I tried to give the fan particles different colors depending on direction (green for up, red for down, blue for sideways), but the green and red particles were not very visible when you viewed them against a backdrop which was the same color. I may try this again with different colors (eg orange, cyan, purple) later.
